Abstract

Problem solving ability is very important both in the learning process, as well as in
everyday life because problem solving is the first step for students to develop ideas in
building new knowledge and developing mathematical skills. The purpose of this study
was to determine how the students' mathematical problem solving ability in the material
of a two-variable linear equation system in class X IA-1 MAN 2 Aceh Besar based on
Polya's theory. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The
subjects in this study were students of class X IA-1, totaling 12 students and taken 2
students with the highest grade category, 2 students in the medium grade category, and 2
students with low grade categories who will be used as research subjects to determine the
level of ability. students' mathematical problem solving. Data was collected through tests,
interviews, and observations. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's
qualitative analysis model, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation and
drawing conclusions. The students' mathematical problem solving ability in the SPLDV
class X IA-1 MAN 2 Aceh Besar material is below 49.92 or still low. Analysis based on
student scores (high, medium, and low) shows that: Subjects with the highest score
category have been able to pass all indicators from understanding the problem, planning
a settlement, implementing a settlement plan, and re-examining, but the process tends to
take a long time, especially at the understanding stage. problems due to reading the
questions over and over again. Subjects with the medium value category have been able
to pass all indicators, although there are stages that have not been maximally passed from
understanding the problem, planning a solution, implementing a settlement plan, and reexamining. Meanwhile, the low score category has not been able to pass all the indicators
of students' mathematical problem solving abilities. Suggestions for teachers are to keep
giving lots of questions about problem solving, guiding students to be more interested in
solving problem solving problems, increasing teacher creativity in applying learning
models to encourage the development of problem solving skills.
