Abstract

The Seumanoe Pucok traditional ceremony is a ceremony found at weddings and circumcision of the
apostles. The formulation of the problem in this study is what is the symbolic meaning contained in
the Seumanoe Pucok custom in Aceh Barat Daya? This study aims to determine the symbolic
meaning contained in the Seumanoe Pucok event in Aceh Barat Daya. This research uses a
descriptive method. The data in this study are the symbols contained in the Seumano Pucok
traditional event. Sources of data in this study were informants in Aceh Barat Daya. Data collection
techniques used in this study, including observation, interviews, and documentation. The data
analysis technique is done by reducing the data, presenting the data and drawing conclusions. The
results showed that the symbols in the Seumanoe Pucok traditional event in Drien Jalo, Kecamatan
Tangan-Tangan Kabupaten Aceh Barat Daya consisted of physical noverbal symbols, nonverbal
symbols of action, and background nonverbal symbols. Physical noverbal symbols consist of coconut
leaf trinkets (Tikar, Keris, Pucok Reubong, Buah Biluluk, Raja Bersilang, Lipan and Bungong
Siyung-yung). Peusijuk Equipment (Bunag Melati, Bunga Mawar, Bunga Seulanga Batang Gebelu,
Jeruk Perut, Daun Pandan and Serai Wangi). Air Limau (On Sisijuk, Naleung Sambo, On Silaklak,
Rangkain Daun, Air Campur Minyak Wangi, Beras, Bu Leukat), and other equipment (Dalong,
Sange, and Ija Seunaleun). The nonverbal symbols of action consist of greetings and odd waterings.
The non-verbal background symbol is the time and place of the execution of Seumanoe Pucok. The
symbolic meaning of Tikar (noble for family and society), Keris (dare to face a new life), Pucok
Reubong (new life), Buah Biluluk (husband and wife), Raja berilang (like a king), Lipan(honored),
and Bungong Siyung -yung (mingle with society). Peusijuk equipment contains the meaning of
blessing prayer so that the couple lives in harmony. Water Lime contains the meaning of purity and
cleanliness. Other equipment means always getting along in the family, protecting each other in their
new life. The conclusion of this study is that the Seumanoe Pucok traditional event is only carried out
at weddings and circumcisions. In this traditional event there are symbols that have their own
meaning for the local community.
