Abstract

Global developments today require the world of education to always change the concept of thinking. The future with the inherent challenges that humanity will face has far-reaching and profound implications for a wide variety of teaching designs and learning techniques. Educational methods really need to be considered, especially for educators, the right model and media will determine the success of a student in the learning process. The purpose of this study was to determine the application of the Discovery Learning model to improve students' understanding and cognitive learning outcomes while at the same time solving students' difficulties in understanding mathematical material, namely the addition of fractions for fifth grade students at SD Negeri 72 Banda Aceh. The type of research used is quantitative with a research design of "One group Pre test Post test Design". The results showed that the post test results were better than the pre test results. This is shown from the value of t-count = 4.88. These results are then consulted with a t-table where the degrees of freedom (α) are 5%, it is obtained t-table = 4.88 because tcount > (1 –α)(n1+n2–2), meaning Ha is accepted or significant.
