PKN learning at the elementary level is the basis for higher levels of education. The results of
preliminary studies conducted during observations showed that the cognitive abilities of fourth
grade students at SD Negeri 69 Banda Aceh on the subject of ethnic, social and cultural diversity
were still below the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) or not in line with expectations.
Because during the learning process students are less enthusiastic and enthusiastic about
participating in learning, especially on ethnic, social and cultural diversity, because teachers still
use the usual methods in general. As for the formulation of the problem in this study, does the word
square learning model affect the cognitive abilities of fourth grade students at SD Negeri 69 Banda
Aceh? This study aims to determine the effect of the word square learning model on the cognitive
abilities of fourth grade students at SD Negeri 69 Banda Aceh. This type of research is
experimental research with a quantitative approach. The design in this study is a pre-experimental
form of one group pretest-posttest design. The sample in this study was the fourth grade students
of SD Negeri 69 Banda Aceh with a total of 22 students, namely by taking the sample with a
purposive sampling technique. The results of the study are based on the results of hypothesis
testing with a significant level = 0.05 and to determine the t-table, the distribution of numbers (db)
is determined as follows: n-1 = 22-1 = 21 the results of the study are obtained tcount , = 8.73 t and
ttable , = 1.72074, . This shows that the value of tcount > ttable, which is 8.73, while the t-table is
1.72074. So it can be concluded that the word square learning model has an effect on students'
cognitive abilities on the material of ethnic, social and cultural diversity of class IV SD Negeri 69
Banda Aceh.

Pembelajaran PKN pada tingkat SD merupakan dasar untuk jenjang pendidikan yang
lebih tinggi. Hasil studi awal yang dilakukan saat observasi menunjukan bahwa
kemampuan kognitif siswa kelas IV SD Negeri 69 Banda Aceh pada materi keberagaman
suku bangsa, sosial dan budaya masih dibawah Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM)
atau tidak sesuai dengan harapan. Karena pada saat berlangsungnya proses pembelajaran
siswa kurang bersemangat dan berantusias mengikuti pembelajaran khususnya pada
materi keberagaman suku bangsa, sosial dan budaya, dikarenakan guru masih
menggunakan cara-cara yang biasa pada umunya. Adapun rumusan masalah dalam
penelitian ini apakah model pembelajaran word square berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan
kognitif siswa kelas IV SD Negeri 69 Banda Aceh? Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk
mengetahui pengaruh model pembelajaran word square terhadap kemampuan kognitif
siswa kelas IV SD Negeri 69 Banda Aceh. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian
eksperimen dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Desain dalam penelitian ini yaitu preexperimental

bentuk one group pretest-posttest design. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah
siswa kelas IV SD Negeri 69 Banda Aceh dengan jumlah 22 siswa yaitu dengan
pengambilan sampel dengan teknik purposiv sampling. Hasil penelitian berdasarkan hasil
pengujian hipotesis dengan taraf signifikan =0,05 dan untuk mengetahui t-tabel maka
ditentukan distribusi bilangan (db) sebagai berikut: n-1 = 22-1 = 21 hasil penelitian
